A Brief Overview of ATM: Protocol Layers, LAN Emulation, and Tra c Management

چکیده
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) has emerged as the most promising technology in supporting future broadband multimedia communication services. To accelerate the deployment of ATM technology, the ATM Forum, which is a consortium of service providers and equipment vendors in the communication industries, has been created to develop implementation and speci cation agreements. In this article, we present a brief overview on ATM protocol layers and current progress on LAN Emulation and Tra c Management in the ATM Forum.

متن کاملAn End-to-End Tra c Management Protocol for IP/ATM Internetworks
In IP/ATM internetworks, ABR rate control shifts any congestion from within the ATM network to the IP-ATM gateway at the edge of the ATM network. Therefore, ABR rate control alone cannot protect the performance of the end-to-end TCP/IP applications in the legacy LANs interconnected by ATM backbone. In this paper, an extension to the standard IP protocol is proposed which can control the rate of...

Emulated LANs in ATM Networks Mohammed H. Sqalli and Eugene C. Freuder Department of Computer Science University of New Hampshire Durham, NH 03824 USA msqalli,[email protected] Abstract Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a technology that allows the integration of all types of tra c in the same network. LAN Emulation (LANE) is destined to support the existing LAN (Local Area Network) applications...
متن کاملLimitation of the Source Routing Protocol in ATM-LANs using the LAN-Emulation
This paper deals with the so-called LAN-Emulation (LAN-E) as specified by the ATMForum, applying the Source Routing Protocol (SRP), which is well known from the Token Ring area. The LAN-E is one possible realisation for the integration of connectionless communication on Local Area Networks (LANs), into the connection oriented Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). The routing in those emulated or vi...
